We know that most people, including victim-survivors, still think of domestic abuse in terms of physical assault – the punching, kicking and pushing that leads to black eyes, split lips and broken bones. In fact, most domestic abuse is not physical: instead, abusers use emotional, psychological and economic abuse to gradually gain power and control over their victims, In most cases, this type of abuse is far more damaging, and takes far longer to escape and recover from, than physical assault, but many people still do not recognise it as domestic abuse. As a result, victim-survivors suffer for many years without realising there is help available, and family and friends don’t recognise what is happening in front of them.
Some victim-survivors can also face additional barriers to recognising domestic abuse and accessing support. These include men, LGBTQ+ victims, and victims from ethnic and religious minorities.
We have created a range of posters and leaflets to help overcome this and ensure victims get the help they so desperately need. Please contact us if you are able to display posters and leaflets in your workplace or your community; we can supply them free of charge, or in most cases you can also print them out from our website.
Note that some posters are specifically designed for the back of toilet cubicle doors, as this is the only place a victim has the privacy to safely read a poster on domestic abuse; these posters are usually too text-heavy for more general display.
